Woolworths has announced it will launch new hybrid stores with the aim of creating a “faster and easier self-checkout experience”.
Hybrid stores will combine self-service and manned registers after purchase data showed a “shift” in customer habits.
“As customer purchasing habits shift, we are seeing smaller, more frequent basket sizes, and a strong customer preference for a faster, easier self-checkout experience,” Woolworths The company spokesman said:

The grocery giant said about 83 percent of customers with a basket containing 20 items or less would choose self-checkout.
However, the majority of customers will choose to pay with staff if their shopping cart contains more than 20 items.
“We know there are some customers who prefer to be served by a team member, and we are gradually rolling out a new front-of-store experience where we use data to ensure we have the right payment options for customers in every local community,” they said.
Images of the recently opened Spotswood store in Melbourne’s south-west show what a mix of manned and self-service checkouts will look like.

The company said the express lanes are already found in about 800 stores.
