Wood trimmer dies after being pulled into a wood chipper

A California tree trimmer died Tuesday after falling into a wood chipper, authorities said.

The man, whose name was not released, was working on a property in the city of Menlo Park when he fell shortly before 1 p.m. 13.00, the police say.

“When police arrived at the scene, a man was found deceased from injuries from the incident,” the statement read.

Video of the scene shows police and firefighters in a shaded area with a yellow tarp covering part of the chipper.

The incident is under investigation by the California branch of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA).

Agency officials said the worker was employed by SP McClenahan, part of Bartlett Tree Experts, KTVU reported.

Local residents said they were shaken by the sudden tragedy.

“We all feel sick and sad,” neighbor Lisa Mitchell told KGO.

“We’re really sorry. We’re trying to imagine what that poor family and their colleagues are feeling. And it’s just, it’s a lot. We just feel terrible.”

Mitchell said SP McClenahan’s services were common in the tree-lined neighborhood.

“We see a lot of their trucks. So I can only imagine what they feel because I’m sure they treat their employees like family and it’s just horrible,” she said.

Fellow resident Thanh Skinner said the accident felt out of place in the quiet area.

“It’s generally very peaceful, quiet, you don’t really see any activity,” they explained.

So when I got home around 2.30pm, the street was completely blocked off. And then we thought that maybe something had happened to one of our neighbors.”

SP McClenahan and Cal/OSHA did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
