Lianne Heffernan found the disturbing thing when she returned home. parked car A shooting occurred in a shopping centre car park in Tahmore, on the south-western outskirts of Sydney, recently, and Camden Police have since issued a warning to locals to be on the lookout for similar objects.
Heffernen told Yahoo News Australia she was “shocked and very shocked” by the incident, especially when she learned someone had placed the object there deliberately.
“It definitely makes me feel more cautious and hesitant to walk out there alone,” she told Yahoo News.
Heffernen’s car remained parked against the back wall of the car park, behind the tram stop, all day until she returned to the car at 5.30pm.
Leanne’s daughter, Hayley Heffernan, said her mother was fortunately on the phone when she approached her car. “The light from the phone was shining on a nail, otherwise she wouldn’t have noticed,” Hayley told Yahoo News.
“It is very scary to think that this may have been a targeted attack or planned for specific people, knowing that they would be stranded on the side of the road at night.
“However, we hope it is just a prank. We have heard of several robberies in the area, but this is the first time we have heard of this particular pattern.”
Local police issue warning after parking lot incident
Hayley has since shared photos of the nail-rigged wooden block on social media, warning other Australians to check behind their wheels before driving.
“Clearly someone has nothing better to do. How disappointing,” Hailey wrote in the post.
Camden Police issued a public warning about the incident, posting photos of Hayley’s wooden block. The post asked people to “beware” of similar items and noted that they had been placed under multiple cars.
The post read: “These items were placed under the wheels of vehicles parked in the parking lot of a shopping mall in Tahmur area. If you find any such items, please contact Narellan Police Station.”
Hailey said she and Leanne called the police to report the situation, but have not yet filed a formal complaint.
“While police have not received any formal reports, officers from Camden Police District Command are aware of an incident involving a vehicle in the Tammore area,” NSW Police confirmed in a statement to Yahoo News Australia.
Citizens complain of similar incidents: “Very bad”
Australians responded to Hailey’s warning online, with one local saying she had heard of incidents like this before.
“Basically, people in parking lots put these bricks with nails under people’s tires so that when you drive over them the tires blow out,” she wrote. “Then these people (who are hanging around waiting for you) come and offer to help you and rob you. It happens all over the world.”
“It’s getting really bad,” another person wrote.
As investigations continue, NSW Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
