Three men charged after allegedly forcing two teenagers to marry

Three men have been charged with facilitating a forced marriage between teenagers in Western Australia.

The Australian Federal Police allege the teenagers, one aged 13 to 15, the other 17, wanted to date each other but were told by family members they couldn’t for cultural reasons – unless they were married.

The three men – two related to the boy and the third to the girl – have been charged with forcing a person to marry after they facilitated a religious wedding between the teenagers last year.

The case was adjourned until August.

Forced marriage can occur under a number of circumstances, including when a person marries without their free or full consent or when a person is coerced, threatened or tricked into marrying, AFP said.
