Paramount+ has announced that the “Star Trek” franchise is about to try something it has never done before — a live-action comedy series.
The new series was announced during the Star Trek Universe panel this morning at Comic-Con, and will be co-written by Lower Decks actress and writer Tawny Newsome and filmmaker Justin Simien.
Alex Kurtzman, the current Star Trek franchise czar, will make his writing debut for the half-hour project.
Some details are still under wraps so it’s not clear if the film will be shot with a single camera or multiple cameras, and the title of the film has not yet been revealed.
However, the short synopsis indicates that the series follows a group of Federation outsiders who serve on a shiny resort planet and discover that their daily adventures are being broadcast to the entire quadrant.
The series will feature some “odd couples” and will be set in the 25th century, which would put it around or after the events of the final season of “Star Trek: Picard,” which takes place in the year 2401.
Kurtzman, Simian and Newsome executive produce alongside Aaron Byers, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth.
