Discussing with British journalist Rebecca Parry about the negative press coverage of the couple, he said the impact made him unwilling to bring Meghan back.

“All it takes is one actor reading this stuff to act on what they’ve read,” he said during the ITV1 documentary Tabloids On Trial.

“Whether it’s a knife or acid, these are things that really worry me. It’s one of the reasons I don’t want to send my wife back to this country.”

The couple stepped back from their roles as senior working members of the royal family in 2020 and moved to the United States, where they now live with their two young children, Archie and Lilibet.

Meghan has not visited British soil since Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in September 2022.

However, Harry made several visits. During one of these visits, he gave evidence in a legal battle against British publisher Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN).

In December 2023, the UK High Court ruled that the Duke of Sussex had been the victim of phone hacking and other “unlawful data collection” by the publisher.

He became the first member of the royal family to give evidence in court in 130 years.

“It would be great if we could do this as a family,” Harry told Barry of his legal battles, before explaining that his decision to testify “caused… part of the rift” with the royal family.

Harry also spoke about his late mother, Princess DianaShe noted that she had had a similar experience with the media, and claimed that she was “probably one of the first people to be hacked.”

In the interview, Barry asked him if the hacking had made him feel paranoid.

“I think the word paranoia is very interesting, because in this case you could be paranoid, but when you are proven innocent it proves that you were not paranoid,” he replied.

“You know, same thing with my mother.

“You know, there is evidence that she was hacked in the mid-nineties, and she was probably one of the first people to be hacked, and yet the press, the tabloid press, still enjoys portraying her as a paranoid nutcase.

“But she wasn’t paranoid, she was absolutely right about what was happening to her. She’s not around today to find out the truth.”

Although it has not been legally proven that Princess Diana, who died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, was hacked, the issue remains a sensitive one for her youngest son.

He also spoke about a story published by MGN that claimed his then-girlfriend Chelsy Davy was about to “ditch him” and was part of the court case.

“I think there’s a lot of … paranoia and fear and anxiety and preoccupation and distrust of the people around you, and obviously a headline like this has no public interest at all,” he said.

Harry described his legal victory last year as a “huge victory”.

“To go there and come out and hear the judge rule in our favor was definitely a huge event,” he said.

“But for him to go to this extent in relation to specific people, you know, it’s not just about individuals.

“It went all the way to the top…these were lawyers, these were senior executives. And to be able to do that in a trial is a huge victory.”
