Prime Video

It took the company nearly 18 months to see this comprehensive revamp of the interface through. During the Amazon Studios first look event, Kashmiri spoke with CNET about the important details that audiences should look for in this Prime Video relaunch.

Entertainment center under one login

One of the most important features of this new version is the ability to access the Prime Video service with a single login. For example, if you subscribe to Max and Starz via Prime Video ChannelsAll it takes is one click to open these apps, and you no longer need to enter separate credentials. Prime Video aims to remove a bunch of frustrating hurdles, giving you a streamlined path to the titles you want.

You’ll also be able to browse titles and manage subscriptions directly through the redesigned navigation bar. People in the US will be able to access over 100 additional subscriptions through the “Subscriptions” destination button alongside deals and bundles.

“This is the kind of thing that frustrates customers,” Kashmiri said. “And I have 10 subscriptions. I’m in the same boat, and I would really like to be able to have one set of algorithms and recommendation systems that understand the entire entertainment experience. That’s what we’re really focused on. That’s what’s really exciting about our position as a destination for all of our aggregation content and all of our partners.”

Navigation and Sports Center Upgrades

Prime Video’s navigation bar already has destinations for “Home,” “Movies,” “TV Shows,” and “Live TV.” Now, sports gets its own button next to the new slots for any additional subscription channels you may have active. The Sports button at the top of the screen provides simplified access to Thursday Night Football, the WNBA, women’s soccer, and a growing selection of on-demand games.

“We now have a dedicated place where you can watch all the live sports, but also all the other sports and on-demand stuff,” Kashmiri added. “It’s also a place where over time you’ll see more leagues and more sports themselves — and you’ll see more content around that sport. Starting with a destination that’s accessible to everyone, it’s building this amazing kind of ecosystem for sports fans that you can experience through the top navigation.”

Prime Video is also looking to improve the way you find everything on the app. Improved organization could help viewers see what content is included with Prime and what titles come with a price tag. Logos displayed on each title tag will now make it easier to distinguish Prime content from subscription content from platforms like Starz or Crunchyroll. You can also look for the yellow shopping bag icon that identifies TV shows and movies available to rent or buy.

Among the new additions to the app are the rotating animations that appear at the bottom of the home screen, which display a selection of your favorite titles to watch on Prime Video.

AI-Enhanced Recommendations

Personalized viewing recommendations aren’t new to Prime Video, but the company is now using generative AI to enhance your unique viewing experience. Under the Movies and TV Shows tabs, content collections like the “Made for You” category will include a collection of titles tailored to your interests.

Content will now be segmented by category and specific tastes, making the viewing experience unique to each user profile. Aside from personalized recommendations, collections like “Trending Shows” and “Top 10 Shows in the US” will be updated regularly and will become easier to find.

From a distance, this new Prime Video experience might look like the one you’re used to. But it’s not. The complex animations, page transitions, and zoom effects make for a “smooth, seamless experience,” Kashmiri said.

Include a “Live TV” option into the mix and the 24/7 channels will start playing automatically, and will continue to do so whether you decide to watch the content in full screen or exit back out to check out other content options.

“I’m personally very proud of the artwork and the quality of expression of these things there,” Kashmiri added. “Instead of making something that’s really cluttered with a lot of tax and a lot of noise, we’re reducing it to the beautiful narrative and the content and the creators’ intent and bringing it all together into something that’s very beautiful and easy.”
