Plans unveiled for leaf-shaped tourist centre in WA

boycott Serpentine Jarrahdale, outside Perth, has unveiled concept designs for a new visitor centre inspired by the shape of jarrah tree leaves.

The proposed Jarrahdale Trails Centre on Millars Road will act as a gateway to the trails. The centre will be used as a protected area for trail users to plan their journey, rest and learn about the surrounding trails, parks and nature reserves.

The motivation behind the new centre is to help the city become a popular destination for trails, with plans envisioning the building as a “landmark in its own right” visible from the main road. The preferred location for the centre is a plot of land next to a residential park – a strategic location that aligns with the goal of increasing visitor numbers.

Initial designs for the building have been completed by S2 Architects. The preliminary design report indicates that the building will be multi-purpose, containing a flexible exhibition and events area, a visitor information and management area, a commercial tenant, and the possibility of a semi-outdoor exhibition. The center will adopt a comprehensive and accessible plan to accommodate a variety of visitor groups – from school groups, hikers and local residents to tourists and mountain bikers.

The proposed site will allow for a two- or two-level facility. The building will be responsive to its site, cascading down to the ground with ground-level entrances on both levels. The roof shape references the shape of leaves, allowing natural light and ventilation to filter through the gaps between the leaves. The material palette includes concrete, copper, garnet and corroded steel, complemented by a colour scheme of terracotta, eucalyptus, medium grey and dark grey.

According to the design report, the project will be developed in three phases. The first phase will include the development of half of the building, including an exhibition and events area, a visitor information and check-in area, a covered playground, a covered terrace and an outdoor dining area. The second phase will mirror the shape of the first half of the building and will include commercial displays and a kitchen. The final phase will include the addition of an amphitheater, research areas and additional offices.

Serpentine Garradell District Councillors unanimously approved the use of the concept plan for funding.
