A storm warning has been issued for southern parts of Western Australia as more than 4,000 people are without power in Perth’s northern suburbs.
People in the Lower Southwest and Greater South are urged to act now ahead of the potential for thunderstorms and rain throughout Thursday night and Friday morning.
Destructive winds with maximum gusts of up to 100 km/h are likely to develop in southwest coastal areas between Margaret River and Esperance.
“This will extend eastwards to cover parts of the southern coastal and south-eastern coastal areas early on Friday morning,” the Fire and Emergency Services Department said.
It comes as 4,424 people remained without power in the Perth suburbs of Enalu, Woodlands, Scarborough and Dubellview on Thursday night.
The unplanned outage was reported shortly after 8 p.m., and service was not estimated to be restored until at least 1 a.m.
The Meteorological Department said about 2.9mm of rain fell in the metropolitan area between 9am and 9pm on Thursday. More rain and possible thunderstorms are expected throughout the evening.
The authority also indicated that there is a possibility of “small hailstones” falling.
Around 9 p.m., firefighters were responding to power lines downed by a tree branch in Willage, near Weber Street. The public should avoid the area.
