Perth couple’s magical engagement at Kings Park and Botanic Gardens’ Lightscape trail

A Perth woman’s visit to the King’s Park Light Trail ended in more than just a couple of photos after she left the sparkling winter attraction with a sparkling engagement bell.

Amy Lee Hillier, 32, and her fiancé Chris Kohler turned what seemed like a formal date into a unique event after Hillier’s partner dramatically dropped his knee.

However, unlike the couple’s love for each other, the place for the marriage proposal was not always like this.

“I wasn’t nervous about proposing to Amy, but I was a little nervous about making it extra special,” Mr. Kohler said.

Earlier this year, the 40-year-old mining manager began his quest to design the perfect ring for his then-girlfriend, but the perfect location won him over.

A train ride to Baldivis one evening was a lightbulb moment, as he spotted the path of glowing lights in the distance, inspiring him to use its 100,000 twinkling lights as a backdrop for his marriage proposal.

A romantic dinner at Fraser’s Restaurant becomes the perfect main course for an evening event.

However, responsible for creating the magical moment and the engagement ring, one element remained outside the control of the FIFO worker.

“I had to ask an audience member to help me by videotaping the show and taking photos,” he said.

The couple work at BHP Nickel West Leinster, met at work nearly three years ago and have been engaged for nearly a month.

The unique Lightscape Trail will remain open to the public with tickets until Sunday, July 28.
