The investigation into the horrific Wembela terror attack will be revealed to the public in a revealing new podcast.
Just weeks before Christmas 2022, religious extremists planned and carried out a shooting rampage on a remote Queensland property, killing two police officers and a neighbour, in addition to the three attackers.
The Supreme Court in Brisbane is due to begin an inquiry later this month to find out what was known and whether the attack could have been prevented.

The commission will investigate the response of Queensland Police, both during and before the massacre, after reports of gunfire being heard in the area and reported to police in the days leading up to the killings.
All of this will be detailed in the new Nine Podcast, The ultimate sacrificeWhile news anchor Melissa Downs and producer Jessica Lodge follow the court proceedings.
The podcast will drop weekly episodes throughout the four-week investigation.
“The ultimate sacrifice“It is a retelling of what happened in Weyambela in December 2022,” Lodge said.
“We actually compiled all of these amazing reports that happened over the days, weeks and even years that followed.
“There is a great deal of responsibility on the families and victims to tell a story like this.”
Downs was preparing to anchor the 6 p.m. newscast when the shooting occurred.
“It was about 5:30 p.m., and we were getting ready to read the news when everything was almost ready, and then suddenly this big news came that something had happened, in the West, some kind of shooting,” she said.
“As the news was progressing, all this information was coming in.”

By the end of the newscast, two officers were dead, a neighbor had been shot, and two other officers were fighting for their lives.
But, as Downs explained, that was just the beginning.
“In the hours and days that followed, so much came out about this story, it was truly amazing,” she said.
The religious extremists responsible for the attack – brothers Trin Nathaniel and Gareth and Gareth’s wife Stacey – had set a trap and waited until police arrived looking for Nathaniel after a missing person report was filed in New South Wales.
Officers Rachel McCraw and Matthew Arnold were ambushed as soon as they entered the property.
His neighbor, Alan Dare, was also shot and killed down the road after hearing gunfire.
The siege ended when tactical police stormed the property, arresting the three police killers.
The investigation is set to hear from surviving officers and loved ones of the victims to seek answers to ensure this does not happen again.
“Having this information, which we’ve only had snippets of, we hope it will help answer the questions, because as the police union president said, the families deserve answers,” Downs said.
