The horde is unforgiving. Every time I overconfidently time my laser scans and think I finally have the advantage over my enemies, the next wave comes back tenfold only to knock me back. I crush them, they come back stronger and overwhelm me, and our little dance begins all over again.
in a playdate game created by Pulp creator Sean Inman, where it’s just you and a hyperthermic alien laser against the world. From the game description:
The lights in the sky are fading. A massive shell around a sick star is the last bastion of civilization witnessing a cosmic extinction event. But on the edge of darkness lurks a maddening horde of darkness, intent on extinguishing the last remaining light.
Your mission is to defend the ball from incoming attackers, using the handle to control the direction of the laser beam and “A” to fire. You can hold “A” to fire a continuous laser beam, but this is a time-limited action – after a few seconds, your laser will overheat and become unusable until it cools down, leaving you completely vulnerable. To prevent this, you can instead fire in short bursts to conserve energy. But when small, fast enemies are coming at you in large numbers, good luck picking them off one by one. When all else fails, you can deploy a bomb to take out a large number of enemies at once.
There are ways to improve the field that will give you a better chance of repelling the attack. After destroying ships, you can collect materials and use the currency from this at the end of each level to buy upgrades and make repairs. One add-on will reduce the recharge time of your laser, while another will strengthen your shield.
With the overheating/cooling element, one feels that every decision involves high risks, laser ball As a result, it’s a very engaging little action game. (The music by Mike Freuden is also very strong.) There are enemies of varying sizes, each type moves at a different speed, and you really have to stay on your toes to make sure you’re making the best use of your lasers for whatever threat is most pressing at the moment. Otherwise, you’ll be left with no weapon when there are dozens of attackers right above you. You can get laser ball Available in Playdate Catalog for $6.
