Jack Black says he has cancelled the rest of Tenacious D’s world tour after bandmate Kyle Gass sparked outrage with his comments about the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.
The comedy rock band was on stage in Sydney, Australia, on Sunday when Gus was asked to make a wish after they presented him with a cake for his 64th birthday.
“Don’t miss Trump next time,” he seemed to reply.
In a statement dated Instagram, externalBlack said he was “shocked” by the comment.
“I will never support hate speech or encourage political violence in any way,” the comedian wrote.
He said he did not feel it was “appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour,” and that the rest of the group’s “creative plans” were on hold.
Black added that he was “grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”
The controversy has already led to the postponement of a concert scheduled for Tuesday in Newcastle, New South Wales.
Gass apologized for the comment on Instagram, saying it was a “serious lack of good judgment.”
He wrote: “The line I improvised on stage in Sydney on Sunday night was extremely inappropriate, dangerous and a huge mistake.
“I do not condone violence in any form against anyone. What happened was a tragedy, and I am deeply sorry for my extreme lack of sound judgment. I deeply apologize to those I let down and am truly sorry for any pain I caused them.”
