An interior designer has revealed a simple and affordable way to make your home look more expensive.

Nicholas Holmes, home designer and furniture buyer at Kmart Australia, tells us how to achieve the ‘luxury on a budget’ look.

Instead of buying new curtains or a rug to freshen up your living space, you can get the same results by simply adding an “unexpected” pop of color.

“Don’t be afraid to try a color that isn’t currently in the space,” Mr. Holmes said.

“Test it out in something small, like this purple side table from Kmart. An unexpected moment of color makes a space feel really designed.”

Once you’ve tried one spot of color, it’s time to add more – but it’s always a good idea to start with smaller areas..

Mr. Holmes shared two more ways to improve space using furniture and decor..

One way, he said, is to “divide” the room into two or three layers of similar items placed next to or on top of each other, which is “more impactful” than spreading them out..

“Investing in three pillows instead of three random items is an effective way to update a space,” he added.

His other method involves adding “high-gloss touches” to bring light and shine to your home.

“We got a lot of ceramics through the glassware and reflective surfaces, which adds an element of something special to the space and makes it feel really elevated,” he said.

Kmart Australia is set to launch a new range of wine glasses, lamps and kitchen essentials later this month as part of its August Living range.

Customers can get their hands on the latest products online and in-store starting July 25.

The collection features rugs, mirrors, chairs and small decor items.

“With this launch, we’ve been more daring and bold in our colour choices,” said Mr Holmes. “We’ve also given every type of customer something new – there’s something for everyone.”

The budget retailer is also set to bring back a range of popular items, including: The Gigi floor lamp, which went viral and sold out earlier this year.
