Hollywood screen icon Shelley Duvall has died at the age of 75.
The actress, who played Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror classic The Shining, died of complications from diabetes at her home in Blanco, Texas.
In the film’s most famous scene, Duvall screams as her murderous husband, Jack Torrance, played by Jack Nicholson, holds an axe to the door while she hides behind it.

“My life partner and my dear, wonderful friend has left us,” said Gilroy, who had been in a relationship with the actress since 1989. “She has been through so much lately, and now she is free. Go away, beautiful Shelly.”
Duvall’s career has included roles in Woody Allen’s Annie Hall, McCabe & Mrs Miller, and Oliver O’Neill in Popeye.
Duvall withdrew from Hollywood in 2002.
She was born in 1949 in Fort Worth, Texas. Her breakthrough role was in the 1975 musical comedy film Nashville.
During her career, she won a number of awards, including the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress for the film 3 Women.
The star spoke about her most famous role in The Shining, describing the legendary Kubrick as being “very warm and friendly” towards her on set.
However, in her later years, the actress reportedly suffered from mental illness and felt burned out by the art world, later making her feelings known in more recent interviews.
In an interview with New York times This year, Duvall said people in Hollywood “hurt” her.
“I was a star, I played leading roles — people think that’s just getting older, but it’s not. It’s violence,” Duvall said.
Notably, she appeared on an episode of Dr. Phil in 2016, where she talked about dealing with mental illness.
The show’s host was heavily criticised for what many saw as exploitation of the artist.
