Global IT outage live: Australian banks, flights and media outlets hit by CrowdStrike software issue

Today’s technology outage may be the largest in history, and shows how powerful a small part of the internet has become over the world’s population.

“It’s absolutely unprecedented in history,” says Angie LaFoyer, ABC’s national technology correspondent.

“We’ve never seen anything this big. In fact, we’ve never seen anything even close to this big.

“In fact, what this does is highlight the danger of what they call in the industry market consolidation, which is a fancy way of saying that a large part of the global economy depends on a very small number of technology companies, just a handful of them, for critical services.

“It’s going to be a long recovery, that’s what I hear, because these things are hard to deal with.”
