Fisherman bitten by sea snake off Darwin coast airlifted to Broome

A man who was bitten by a sea snake off the coast of Darwin on Monday morning has been airlifted to Broome for treatment.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority said a Northern Territory fishing vessel operated by CareFlight was cruising Joseph Bonaparte Bay, about 360 kilometres southwest of Darwin, and contacted AMSA at about 9.45am (local time) on July 15.

They reported to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority that a male crew member had been bitten by a sea snake and was in need of urgent medical attention.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority dispatched a LifeFlight rescue helicopter from Truscott Air Force Base in Western Australia, which arrived on scene at 11.45am (National Time) and recovered the patient from the fishing vessel.

AMSA’s Cairns-based vessel Challenger was also on scene to provide support.

The LifeFlight helicopter transported the crew member to Truscott, where he was met by a Royal Flying Doctors Service aircraft to fly him to Broome for treatment.

Recent reports confirmed that the man’s condition is stable.
