CORTLAND, Neb. (KOLN) – Lincoln-Lancaster County Emergency Management reported Sunday that there are at least two large grass fires just south of the county creating smoky conditions in the southern part of the county.
Lincoln-Lancaster County Emergency Management is asking people living between 54th and 38th Street and Firth to Olive Creek Road to evacuate the area to the north and east. Individuals in southwestern Lancaster County are being asked to consider voluntary evacuation to the north and east until further notice.
The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office issued an evacuation order for areas south and west of Southwest 12th Street and West Saltillo Road.
According to a reporter on the scene, the fire is just east of Cortland, near Apple Road. Several fire brigades are responding to the fire.
Due to the strong winds and dry conditions, a red flag warning is in effect until 8 p.m.
According to the Nebraska State Patrol, troopers are helping emergency managers evacuate some areas in southern Lancaster County and northern Gage County due to the fire.
