Dr. Phil asks vigilant educators: ‘What makes you think you know better’ than parents what is best for children?

Parents and educators argued on Wednesday about Dr. Phil over woke curriculum in schools, where both sides of the debate discussed the Parental Rights in Education Act, signed into law by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

“National sex education standards right now for K-3 say that gender ideology — those kids need to know in 3rd grade that you can be a boy or a girl, neither or both. That’s very troubling for our moms and parents,” Moms for Liberty co-founder Tina Descovich said. “There’s no reason a kindergarten teacher should be teaching that to 5-year-olds, it’s something families should be discussing.”

She later commented on how some curricula have been particularly hidden from parents over the past few years.

Advocates discussed how issues of race and gender are discussed in schools.

“The politicians in the state of Florida, and this is directly from her organization, from when I was on the school board,” Descovich said, pointing to Equality for Florida Executive Director Nadine Smith. “They have put procedures and policies in place in the state of Florida that not only do not inform parents of these decisions being made about the safety of their children, they are intentionally deceiving parents. This is very troubling to us and this is one of the reasons because mothers are so united behind this mission, they don’t want to be cheated by teachers and principals.”

Professor Jody Armor criticized Florida’s Parental Rights in Education Act as having a “chilling effect” on teachers, saying it uses “vague and amorphous standards” to the point that “you don’t know if you’re going to run afoul of them , you just avoid those conversations.”

Armor added that while educators recognize the “parental rights framework” and that “we want parents to be engaged in their children’s development … we also, as a public school system, want to educate citizens who are going to go out and flourish and thrive. a democracy that is multicultural.”

“But the onus for that is on the parents,” replied Dr. Phil. “They are in control of the care and custody of their children and my question to you is what makes you think you know better than a parent about what is going to happen to a child when they have a life-changing decision about , whether they” do you have to make a decision about gender or something else? You need to call before you give them a Tylenol.”

Dr. Phil went on to suggest that educators cannot hide the political ideology that children are taught in school from parents. “You can’t assume that this kid can’t take this information home.”
