Ledger’s close friend, Samuel Johnson, said the late actor had difficulty dealing with fame, recalling an “intense” situation with fans that left the 28-year-old actor “heartbroken.”
“I walked him down the street (once),” Johnson told KIIS FM’s Will Woody.
“I remember about three-quarters of the way through the neighborhood, there were four girls who had fainted.
“They suddenly fell when they saw it. I couldn’t believe it. Not one, not two, not three, but four inside one building. I’ve never seen anything like it before. It was amazing.
“I asked him, ‘How do you deal with this?’ He looked at me very sadly and said, ‘I can’t.’”
The Oscar-winning Australian actor was found dead in his New York apartment from an apparent drug overdose.
He posthumously won an Oscar in 2009 for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight, and his passing marked the loss of one of the finest actors of his generation.
