Cops fatally shoot parolees in NYC: officials

Police shot and killed a parolee who was brandishing a gun during a fight in upper Manhattan Sunday morning.

Uniformed police officers were at Nagle Avenue and Dyckman Street in Inwood around 1 p.m. 3 a.m. when they saw the 29-year-old with a gun involved in a fight and ordered him to drop the weapon, NYPD Patrol Chief Jeffrey Maddrey said.

“They are observing a dispute,” Maddrey said. “As they get closer to the fight, they observe a man with a gun in his hand fighting in the crowd. The officers exit their vehicle and give commands for the subject to drop the firearm.”

The man was struck several times around the body and was pronounced DOA at an area hospital.  Four officers also went to the hospital to be checked out, but were not injured by gunshots. The officers shouted “repeated commands” and then fired their weapons, he said.

“They fire multiple shots and hit the suspect with the gun around the body,” Maddrey said.

Another man in the crowd suffered a wound, but it was not clear who shot him, Maddrey said.

Four police officers fired their weapons, Maddrey said. They were taken to a local hospital and treated for tinnitus.

The police were unsure what the disturbances were about.
