Former President Trump on Thursday shared words of support with the families of those charged with attacking the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Driving the news: “People, in my opinion, have been treated unconstitutionally and very, very unfairly, and we’re going to get to the bottom of it,” Trump said in a video played during a fundraiser organized by the Patriot Freedom Project, which helps those charged in the case .riots.
- “You look at other groups that have done terrible things and basically nothing happened to them,” he said. “So it’s a very unfair situation.”
- He also talked about the “weaponization of the Justice Department,” saying we cannot let this happen, and warned that the country “is going communist.”
Between the lines: Since Trump declared his 2024 candidacy last month, his embrace of extremists is back in the spotlight, sparking renewed outrage over the former president’s support for violent insurgents and white nationalists.
