Bureau of Meteorology forecasts damaging winds, rain, hail and snow for Victoria, South Australia and ACT

Much of the country is expected to experience a wintry mix of cold weather and damaging winds, while some states are bracing for more snow.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Jonathan Howe said southeast Australia would see mixed conditions on Friday.

“A strong cold front is expected to bring damaging winds, rain, hail and more snow to south-eastern Australia,” Mr Howe said.

The agency expects destructive winds to affect parts of South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory.

Destructive winds are likely to hit the southern coast of Western Australia on Friday as a cold front sweeps through the region.

“Devastating winds of more than 90 kilometres per hour have the potential to down trees and power lines,” Mr Howe warned.

“It could also lead to dangerous blizzard conditions in high mountain areas.

“Winds are expected to initially pick up across the Lofty Ranges in South Australia from Friday morning before spreading to other coastal parts of South Australia.”

Victorians can also expect damaging winds from late Friday afternoon.

Mr Gao said the strong winds would hit the north-east before extending to New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.

The winds come on the heels of a cold front, which has already recorded between 15 and 50mm of rainfall in southern Australia.

Mr Gao said the cold front would cross the Payette area on Friday before extending into Victoria and Tasmania.

“Rainfall will increase in south-east New South Wales on Saturday,” he added.

Heavy rain is also expected in southern areas.

The agency also predicted the possibility of flooding in Port Phillip Bay and Lakes Entrance Bay.

Meanwhile, snow is also expected to fall in parts of the southeast of the country from Friday night into Saturday morning.

“We will see snow falling to around 900 metres in New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania,” Mr Howe said.

“We could see heavy snow in the central highlands of NSW and in Victoria (in) the Grampians and central ranges.

Maximum temperatures in Brisbane are expected to reach 21C on Friday, while in Sydney they will reach 18C.

In Melbourne, temperatures will reach 12 degrees with a 95 per cent chance of rain.

Perth will reach 17C on Friday, with Adelaide forecast to reach 14C.
