Brittany Higgins and her husband revealed they are “very excited” about the next chapter in their lives.
Former Liberal Party staffer Brittany Higgins is set to marry her partner David Sharaz.
“I can’t wait to meet you,” the happy couple announced on their Instagram account on Sunday.
“I am very happy to welcome a new member to our little family.
“Your parents are already obsessed with you, and you’re not even here yet.”
The happy couple recently got married at one of Australia’s most prestigious wedding venues, The Valley Estate on the Gold Coast, in June.
They celebrated their wedding with a small group of close friends and family in Queensland.
After sharing the exciting life update on social media, hundreds of people expressed their joy by sending their best wishes to the parents-to-be.
“I came as close to jumping for joy as I could, oh my god,” one person wrote.
“What a beautiful, joyful, and lucky thing this little one is to have you as a mother.”
“This is ridiculous,” said another.
The pair first met in 2020, when Mr Sharaz was working as a producer for Karl Stefanovic’s brother, Pete, on his Sky News morning show.
Mr Sharaz has previously described seeing the “beautiful” Ms Higgins walk through the door of a television studio in Parliament House.
On their wedding day, Mr. Sharaz shared a funny conversation he had with his bride-to-be long before they started dating.
He revealed he had mistakenly sent a photo of Ms Higgins next to the famous “budget tree” in Parliament Square from her Instagram account to her, rather than to a friend as he had intended.
Commenting on a photo of Ms Higgins, Mr Sharaz wrote: “Love this photo, but mainly the tree.”
In a caption to the photo in June, Mr Sharaz wrote: “I accidentally sent a picture of myself to a girl I had a crush on.”
“In a few years we’ll be married! Romantic comedies are already in.”
The couple currently live in the Haute-Languedoc region of France.
The move comes five years after Ms Higgins alleged she was raped by former parliamentary staffer Bruce Lerman in Parliament House in 2019.
Mr. Lerman has always denied the charges, and pleaded not guilty to one count of non-consensual sex before the trial was canceled due to jury misconduct.
Earlier this year, Judge Michael Lee ruled in federal court that Lerman was satisfied under a civil standard — which is different from the criminal standard — on the balance of probabilities that Ms. Higgins had been raped.
The decision comes after Lerman filed a lawsuit against Network 10 and journalist Lisa Wilkinson over a report on the alleged rape on The Project in 2021.
Mr. Lerman is appealing the decision.
Meanwhile, the former Liberal staffer and her new husband are due to face a hearing in a defamation case brought by Senator Linda Reynolds on Monday.
The couple is not required to attend the hearing in Perth.
The senator is suing over allegations that her reputation has been damaged by multiple social media posts by Ms Higgins and Mr Sharaz.
She alleged that posts by Ms Higgins and her husband, David Sharaz, suggested that she had been involved in a political cover-up of Ms Higgins’ alleged rape in Parliament House.
