Alex Berenson blasts Biden’s move to pardon marijuana possession: ‘Pure theater’ to appease pro-weed liberals

Author Alex Berenson calls President Biden’s move to pardon all prior federal simple marijuana possession offenses “pure theater” that is “meaningless” in the grand scheme of things.

The White House decision, seen as a step toward decriminalizing the drug, applies to those convicted of simple possession of marijuana, including those in the District of Columbia, according to senior officials. Berenson feels that people familiar with his 2019 book “Tell Your Children: The Truth About Marijuana, Mental Illness, and Violence,” which links marijuana use and mental illness, would be surprised that he’s not mad about Biden’s decision.

“I don’t have a big problem with this for a couple of reasons, I mean, I don’t think anyone should go to jail for possession of marijuana. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t necessarily put people in jail for human trafficking. , or farming, but possession, I think there’s a pretty clear consensus that you shouldn’t go to jail for that,” Berenson told Fox News Digital.

BIDEN ALLOWED ALL PRIOR COMMITMENTS OF SIMPLE MARIJUANA POSSESSION

“But more importantly, this is just pure theater … in fact, it’s pointless,” Berenson continued. “It’s actually theater in a good way for those of us who don’t support full national legalization.”

Berenson noted that many on the left assumed Biden would push for national legalization, which has not happened, but the administration felt they had to throw the pro-legalization community a bone.

“He seems to have, personally, strong feelings about this,” Berenson said. “He’s basically indicated that he’s not going to allow legalization, and I think this was essentially a smear for people in his administration who wanted to look good before the midterms.”

The pardons will help people with simple marijuana possession convictions overcome obstacles to finding a job or renting a home, Biden said. But Berenson feels it’s just another talking point designed to appease pro-marijuana Democrats.

“There’s nobody in federal prison, right now, for simple possession of marijuana,” Berenson said. “I think it’s the least he can possibly do.”

Indeed, White House officials told The New York Times that “there are no people now serving time in federal prisons solely for possession of marijuana.”

“Moreover, [Biden] didn’t extend it to human trafficking, he didn’t do anything that could have led to a meaningful number of people getting out of prison,” Berenson said. “It’s theater, and to the extent that he’s making a political decision, I don’t know. actually don’t necessarily disagree with him.”

In addition to the pardons, Biden urged governors to follow suit on state marijuana offenses and directed Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and Attorney General Merrick Garland to begin reviewing how marijuana is classified under federal drug laws.

Berenson has been an outspoken critic of marijuana for years and stated in “Tell Your Children” why he believes support for the drug is built on myths. He also feels that marijuana has been “legalized in the worst possible way” in the states where it has already been legalized because it is often synonymous with medicine.

“It’s a drug that people use to get high,” he said. “We legalized it under false pretenses. We lied about its risks, and in the years since we’ve legalized it, there’s been a huge increase in crime, nationally. It’s not all because of the legalization of cannabis, of course, but one of the promises of legalization was “This will help the police focus on serious crime and we will see crime go down,” but that is not what has happened in the United States.”

As a result, Berenson said legalization “has already been a disastrous experience,” and Biden’s push to appease pro-weed liberals won’t help matters.

“It’s only going to get worse,” he said.
