1 person killed after shootout with police in Inwood

INWOOD, Manhattan (WABC) — One person was killed after a police-involved shooting in the northern Manhattan neighborhood of Inwood early Sunday.

Police say it is too early to determine what initially caused the initial dispute.

The intersection of Dyckman Street and Nagle Avenue was littered with shell casings and evidence marks.

Detectives were at the scene for more than 12 hours after gunfire lit up the area overnight.

Workers nearby heard a rapid succession of gunfire around 10 p.m

“I see a lot of shots, it’s like a 30, 39 shot, that’s what I hear, and it’s a lot of police, a lot of people running in the street,” said one worker.

Police say four officers with the Neighborhood Safety team were driving through that area in an unmarked car when they saw a fight and a man holding a gun in the crowd.

Surveillance video from a nearby business shows people running from the scene and others taking cover between parked cars.

The police state that all four officers opened fire on the 29-year-old man.

Cellphone video shows commotion and crews trying to revive the man before he was taken to hospital.

“They give commands to the person to drop the firearm, they yell repeated commands and then at some point officers fire their weapons,” said one officer.

He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He was then pronounced dead a short time later.

The gun in the officer’s possession was recovered from the crime scene.

At this point, police say they still don’t know exactly what the dispute was about.

For a long time, store workers who take pride in keeping the area clean feel as if they are fighting a losing battle. One they can’t clean up alone.

Police have not yet released the man’s name, but told Eyewitness News only that he was out on parole.

They found another man grazed by a bullet in the same area, who is currently in hospital receiving treatment.

Police are now investigating to find out how it happened.
